While today's economic climate may bring much anxiety to the arts community, it also challenges arts organizations to be more strategic, to work in partnership with each other, and to be more dedicated and disciplined not just to their art but to their own sustainability as an institution. This will require some form of change by arts organizations themselves to think and behave differently, to reach out to different audiences, to build bridges with new funders and donors, all the while continuing to do what they do best...create art.
Toward that end, the Advancing Sacramento Arts initiative will support small to medium-sized arts organizations over the next two years and work with arts supporters to understand their value in helping to create an arts endowment at the Foundation to advance arts in Sacramento. Our first phase will be to simply make small grants to broaden the art experience throughout the city and county, and packaging those arts experiences to educate the public and arts supporters. Concurrently, we will be launching a capacity development series of workshops aimed at strenghtening arts managers, leaders, and administrators to not just operate their organizations with improvement, but to engage in new thinking, to be exposed to the best practitioners in arts administration, and to form alliances with each other in meaningful ways.
The Foundation encourages the arts community to use our website as a learning tool. We will periodically update the site with news, information, and other resources to build a knowledge network for arts in Sacramento.
