Sacramento Region Community Foundation

The Sacramento Region Community Foundation is leading an effort to help the new face of homelessness: families and individuals displaced by job losses and the rise in foreclosures. In this economic climate these new homeless are not just the chronically homeless, they are our former co-workers who were laid off and our former neighbors who couldn't make the rent or mortgage. The new face of homlessness in Sacramento looks like you or me and they need a helping hand.

In an effort to prevent homelessness and rapidly rehouse individuals and families, a unique program being implemented in Sacramento County prevents the near-homeless from losing their homes and shortens the time homeless families and individuals displaced by the economy spend in shelters. Support services are provided to families and individuals to help rebuild their lives as members of neighborhoods and communities rather than from streets or shelters.

We now have a one time opportunity to leverage the support of the federal government to make a real difference among the homeless populations in Sacramento. For every $1 raised privately, we receive $4 in emergency funds from the Federal Government. Our goal is to raise $400,000 to receive $1.6 million, allowing up to 2,000 eligible families and individuals to be served. We are asking you to consider donating one day's worth of rent or mortgage to this cause to help make a real and lasting impact in the Sacramento community.

Scholarship season is underway at the Sacramento Region Community Foundation! Every year SRCF administers dozens of scholarships. These scholarships are available to graduating high school students and current college students in their pursuits of a college education. Award amounts and eligibility requirements vary, but all our scholarships are listed online complete with eligibility requirements and application instructions.

Amidst the recent budget cuts and rises in tuition costs, it has become ever more challenging to finance an education. SRCF is committed to ensuring that the students of the Sacramento Region have access to higher education and is proud to work with our family of donors to offer dozens of scholarships for the 2010-2011 school year.

Arts organizations across the region are struggling to survive in the current economic climate. While the Foundation continues to support organizations providing critical human services in our community, we are also committed to ensuring that art continues to thrive throughout the Sacramento Region. In December 2009, the Foundation awarded twelve organizations with Arts Opportunity Grants to support small to large organizations in ongoing programs and operations. In May the Sacramento Region Community Foundation brought Michael Kaiser (pictured on the left), President of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, to address the Sacramento arts community. During this meeting Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson (pictured on the right) and Mr. Kaiser forged a partnership that is yielding benefits for all Sacramentans. On Friday, October 9, 2009 the Kennedy Center announced that Sacramento would be the launch city for the nationwide arts education initiative, "Any Given Child."
